Russell Medical Center

Russell Medical, located in Alexander City, is a not-for-profit, 81-bed acute care facility serving the needs of east Central Alabama.  Founded by textile pioneer Benjamin Russell to provide health services to the Russell Mills employees and citizens alike, Russell Medical has been proudly serving the healthcare needs of the Lake Martin area since 1923, and accredited by The Joint Commission since 1959.   The main campus boasts 52 active staff physicians covering 28 medical specialties, and approximately 600 employees.

 Russell Medical features all private rooms; LDR birthing suites; seven OR suites, plus a C-section room in Obstetrics; Cardiology & Vascular Services; Robotic Surgery; Oncology services including chemotherapy and radiation oncology.  Centers of Excellence include:  Sleep Disorders Center; Women’s Center – Mammography; Transitional Care Unit (TCU); Total Fitness – exercise & rehabilitation services; Russell Retail Pharmacy; Total Healthcare primary care practice; Urgent Care; UAB Medicine – Russell Medical Cancer Center; Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine; Health Partners of New Site and Medical Park Family Care in Dadeville.  Additionally, the Russell Medical Foundation provides healthcare scholarships to students throughout the Lake Martin area, and assists with capital improvements and medical technology upgrades through generous donations from donors. 

 Russell Medical became a member of UAB Health System in 2020 following action by the respective boards of each entity. In 2021, CEO Jim Peace announced the development of a multi-facility expansion project made possible by a generous donation by Ben and Luanne Russell. The Russell Legacy Project is currently underway and will offer services to the aging population to include 26 single-family cottages on campus and the Benjamin Russell Center for Advanced Care, which will house medical specialists and services under the medical direction of Dr. Bob Edwards, endowed chair of geriatric medicine.
